The Michigan Local Government Management Association had its 2012 Winter Institute in East Lansing this week under the theme “Coaching a New Season.” The organization represents executives from Michigan’s cities, villages, counties and townships and this year’s winter seminar drew more than 200 officials. Topics for the four-day conference included the value of creating a sense of place in restoring Michigan to prosperity by Michigan Municipal League CEO Dan Gilmartin; how to propose a bill; shared services and best practices in local government; community branding strategies; complete streets; the Economic Vitality Incentive Program (EVIP) formerly known as revenue sharing; municipal credit ratings; EVIP and employee compensation; communicating with your residents; creativity and innovation; accreditations; staff effectiveness;  legal ramifications of social media; issues surrounding privatization; public safety leadership; the economics of place; legislation impacting health insurance plans. At the conclusion of the conference MLGMA selected Wyoming City Manager Curtis Holt as its 2012 President. He succeeds Farmington Hills City Manager Steven Brock, who was the 2011 President. The Michigan Local Government Management Association had its 2012 Winter Institute in East Lansing this week under the theme “Coaching a New Season.” The organization represents executives from Michigan’s cities, villages, counties and townships and this year’s winter seminar drew more than 200 officials. Topics for the four-day conference included the value of creating a sense of place in restoring Michigan to prosperity by Michigan Municipal League CEO Dan Gilmartin; how to propose a bill; shared services and best practices in local government; community branding strategies; complete streets; the Economic Vitality Incentive Program (EVIP) formerly known as revenue sharing; municipal credit ratings; EVIP and employee compensation; communicating with your residents; creativity and innovation; accreditations; staff effectiveness;  legal ramifications of social media; issues surrounding privatization; public safety leadership; the economics of place; legislation impacting health insurance plans. At the conclusion of the conference MLGMA selected Wyoming City Manager Curtis Holt as its 2012 President. He succeeds Farmington Hills City Manager Steven Brock, who was the 2011 President.
